GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Sumba National Park, covering 2 020 km is bordered in part by Lake Tanganyika and the Lufubu River. Away from the lake, much of the park's area is taken up by a plateau which is covered mainly by miombo woodland and small areas of open grassland. Game-viewing within the park is limited because of the lack of a proper road network, but during the dry season a number of species come to drink from the lake. visitors to the park may see elephant, buffalo, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, hippopotamus, puku, roan, sable, waterbuck, yellow-backed and blue duiker, lion and leopard. The Tanganyika water cobra, a fish-eating snake, is common in the lake, as are crocodile. The birdlife is varied, and at the Kalombo Falls, near Mbala, may marabou storks breed n the cliffs during the dry season. Location: Far northern Zambia; north east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the road to Mpika, then take the road northwards to Mbala, there turn left and continue to the eastern edge of the park. Internal roads are usually in poor condition, check with the authority. Accommodation: There are chalets, each with a bathroom, at Kasaba Bay. Nkamba Bay and Ndole Bay on the lake shore. Other facilities: Fishing (best between November and March; boats and tackle can be hired); limited game-viewing and night drives; night boat rides; guided walks. Open: Throughout the year. Beware: Malaria; tsetse fly; crocodiles
